Abstract

PURPOSE: The titled crosslinked fiber with high resistances to heat, oil and solvents that is produced by melt spinning a silyl-modified polyolefin and crosslinking it with water in the presence of a silanol condensation catalyst, thus permitting the production under mild treating conditions by no use of expensive facilities.
CONSTITUTION: A silane monomer such as vinyl trimethoxysilane and a radical initiator such as a peroxide are added to a polyolefin such as polyethylene and kneaded under heating to form a silyl-modified polyolefin. Then, the polyolefin is fed to an extruder and made into fibers. The fibers are crosslinked by adding water in the presence of a silanol condensation catalyst such as dibutyltin dilaurate to give the objective fibers. The melt-spun fibers are preferably drawn by 500W1,300% and heat set before the crosslinking treatment.
