Abstract
PURPOSE:To subject the surface of steel material to a diffusion treatment without removing scale in advance by a method in which an antioxidant layer is further formed on diffusion elements placed on the scale-present surface of a steel material and then heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the scale. CONSTITUTION:Various elements, e.g., Cr, Ni, etc., are placed on the scale-present surface of a steel material, and then an antioxidant layer is further formed on these elements. Then, the surface of the steel material so treated is heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the scale on the surface, whereby the diffusion elements can easily move the molten scale layer, reach the surface of the steel material, and then diffuse into the interior of the steel material. The composition and the melting point of the scale usually formed on the steel material are mostly FeO and 1,370 deg.C.
