Abstract

PURPOSE:Continuously cast steel material is quenched from a gamma zone temperature, then requenched from a alpha+gamma zone temperature and tempered at a temperature of below A1 modification point, thus eliminating surface crack defects from the high tensile steel material. CONSTITUTION:Continously cast and rolled steel materials have segregated C, Mn, P, S, etc., produced in the casting process, at the center area of the materials. The steel material is first quanched into water from a temperature of gamma zone (austenite zone), or about 930 deg.C. The material is then maintained at a temperature of 780 deg.C which is alpha+gamma zone for about 30 minutes, to diffuse C, Mn, P, and S to the central area thereby removing temperature segregation. From this temperature the material is quenched and then tempered at about 650 deg.C which is below A1 modification point (723 deg.C) for about 30 minutes. The process thus prevents surface crack occurrence which otherwise may caused by segregated components.
