Abstract

PURPOSE: To make ingredients (alcohols, etc.) causing an offensive smell to be readily removed by distillation, to form high boiling ingredients, and to obtain a methyl ionone having noble sweetness without the offensive smell, by treating the methyl ionone with a specific acid.
CONSTITUTION: A ϕ-methyl ionone is subjected to ring formation in the presence of an acid catalyst to give a reaction solution, which is properly washed with water and rectified. Prepared intermediate fractions of all steps containing methyl ionone, methyl ionone of a main fraction, or a solution containing them is treated with an inorganic acid (phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, etc.), organic acid (carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, etc.), or Lewise acid (boron trifluoride, zinc chloride, etc.) having pKa in water at 25°C not more than 3. The treatment converts alcohols having boiling points close to those of the desired methyl ionone to low boiling ingredients and reduces unstable ketones.
