Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce fuel gas at low cost, by a method wherein in a process for low-temperature steam reforming of hydrocarbons, the reaction is conducted in the presence of a catalyst obtd. by adding CeO2 as a cocatalyst to a Ru catalyst to reduce the content of Ru in the catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In a process for low-temperature steam reforming of hydrocarbons, a catalyst consisting of Ru-CeO2 heat-resistant inorg. oxide carrier is used. The appropriate amount of Ru is about 0.1W20% based on the weight of the carrier which is burned red hot. The appropriate amount of the CeO2 cocatalyst is about 0.01W10 atoms of Ce per atom of Ru. The catalyst may be in another form before it is used for the reaction. Namely, a Ru cpd. such as ruthenium oxide or ruthenium chloride which can be reduced to Ru metal in a reaction atmosphere, can be used. Similarly, a cerium cpd. capable of coversion to CeO2 can be used. Examples of the cerium cpd. are Ce(NO3)3, the Ce salts of org. acids, and mixed rare earth cpd. having a high Ce content. A preferred inorg. oxide carrier is alumina.
