Abstract

PURPOSE: To freely control nonvolatile functions of a nonvolatile semiconductor memory device, by making it possible to control freely the charging operation and discharging operation of a chargeable battery.
CONSTITUTION: When main power source 2 is abnormal, information in a memory device is held by feeding electric power from battery 3. Then, when main power source 2 is put to work or recovers, battery 3 is charged. If the capacity of the battery is enough at this time, switch 8 is changed over to a trickle charge side to charge the battery so that its self-discharge is compensated. However, if the capacity of the battery is low, the battery can be charged in a short time by being charged rapidly with switch 8 placed at the side of resistance 7 and battery 3 can be held in readiness for the abnormal operation of main power source 2. With switch 8 at neither the trickle charge side nor the high-speed charge side, the discharge of the battery can be stopped only through the operation of switch 8. Thus, effective nonvolatile storage is provided even for a power source fault.
