Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an oxidation catalyst of high catalytic activity performance and a long life by applying chrome plating on a porous metal carrier, then dispersedly depositing platinum group metal particles thereon then heating the same in mixed gases of oxygen-hydrogen-inert gas. CONSTITUTION:Chrome plating is applied by electroplating or the like on a porous metal carrier; thence, platinum group metal particles are dispersedly deposited thereon by a plating method of wet or dry type. After this, the catalyst is heat- treated in mixed gases of oxygen-hydrogen-inert gas. This yields the catalyst of a long life of which the chrome plated layer where there are no platinum group metal particles mentioned above is surface-oxidized. Here, it is preferable that said porous metal carriers consists essentially or wholly of nickel or chromium. Metals consisting wholly or essentially of palladium are preferable for the platinum group metals. The mixed gases for heating the catalyst preferably contain oxygen of >=0.5 time mole the hydrogen.
