Abstract

PURPOSE: To decompose a styrene compound having a high toxicity rapidly, by bringing a microorganism belonging to the genus Pseudomonas and having the ability to decompose the styrene compound or a culture by the microorganism into contact with the styrene compound.
CONSTITUTION: A microbial cell or a culture by Pseudomonas 305-STR-1-4 strain (FERM-P No.4507) or Pseudomonas 311-STWR-1-2 strain (FERM-P No.4508) belonging to the genus Pseudomonas is brought into contact with a styrene compound, e.g. styrene monomer or styrene oxide, to decompose the compound. The microorganism is preferably cultivated in a culture medium containing a nitrogen source, an inorganic salt, etc. at a styrene compound concentration of about 1W 100,000ppm at about 25W35°C and about a neutral pH.
