Abstract

PURPOSE:The temperatures of melted glass in the main part and in the nozzle part of a crucible are controlled separately with different heaters, thus producing, with industrial simplicity, glass pipes with uniform wall thickness with high accuracy even when a small amount of pipes are produced. CONSTITUTION:Nozzle 2 is sealed at the bottom part under cooling with water cooler 13 and glass is fed until the level of the melted glass comes to a set height. Then, heaters 6, 7 are used to keep the temperature of the melted glass to 1050 deg.C at which the viscosity of melted glass shows about 10<1.5> poise for logner than 6hr to effect deaeration and uniform distribution of temperature. Then, heaters 6, 7, and 8 are set to 720, 735 and 685 deg.C respectively, at which the viscosity becomes about 10<5.2>, 10<4.5> and 10<6.2> poises respectively, and kept for 1.5hr to make each part the set tempeature. The water cooler 13 is demounted and a glass pipe is made under controlling heater 8 according to the temperature sensed by thermocouple 11, for example, a glass pipe of 25mm. outside diameter and 1mm. wall thickness 15 is made at a speed of 0.5m/min.
