Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a compound titanium oxide of needlelike shape, etc. in which the particles are oriented in a given direction, by reacting titanium dioxide particles of needlelike rutile crystalline structure with a desired finely divided raw material.
CONSTITUTION: Titanium dioxide particles of needlelike rutile crystalline structure are prepared by oxidizing a solution of a titanous chloride, e.g. titanium trichloride, at a temperature of the boiling point or below gradually. The resultant particles are mixed with a finely divided raw material for foming a compound titanium oxide, e.g. barium carbonate or lead nitrate, reacted by the heat treatment, and pulverized to give needlelike or prismatic compound titanium oxide particles, e.g. barium titanate or lead titanate. A sintered porcelain of compound titanium oxide in which the cryst orientation of crystalline particles is directed in a given plane or direction can be prepared from the resultant particles.
