Abstract
PURPOSE: To raise the efficiency of operation of an arc furnace for treating waste material, by forming a slag hole at the central portion of a hearth in the manner that it is surrounded at its upper end portion by a weir, so that molten slag is discharged to the outside from the slag hole after overflowing the weir.
CONSTITUTION: A slag hole 19 is formed at the central portion of a hearth 20 of an enclosed type arc furnace 1, and the upper end portion of the slag hole 19 is surrounded by a weir 21. By producing arc discharge by supplying current to electrodes 13 after sludge is put into the arc furnace 1, organic substances in sludge are gasified and discharged to the outside from an outlet port 16. On the other hand, inorganic substances in the sludge are converted into molten slag 31. As the amount of molten slag 31 is increased, it overflows the weir 21 and dropped into a water tank 24 from slag hole 19. Then, it is carried to the outside by a conveyor 25. Therefore, it is made unnecessary to open a slag hole in furnace wall 18 at each time of discharging the slag to the outside, so that the efficiency of operation of the furnace can be raised.
