Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the heating efficiency and the heating rate by dumping waste or the like onto a base metal previously charged in a small amount in an arc furnace in which an electrode hangs with a conductor layer arranged on the bottom facing the electrode.
CONSTITUTION: As a base metal, an iron with a high content of carbon, for example, is charged in a small amount into a furnace from a base metal charging box 2A. With the energization of electrodes 4AW4C, an arc is produced between said electrodes, the base metal and a conductor layer 5. The base metal is melted to form a melted layer 6 covering the conductor layer 5. Then, when an industrial waste 8 or the like is dumped into the furnace, organic matter in the waste is decomposed in a reducing atmosphere into carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane gas, water and the like. On the other hand, inorganic matter floats as slag while heavy metal is dissolved into the melted layer 6. They are withdrawn from a slag discharging port 3.
