Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to minimize hardening distortion and shorten treatment time of the succeeding processes, and, at the same time, to omit some processes, by lowering gas carburizing, nitriding and hardening temperatures when heat treatments, such as gas carburizing, nitriding, hardening, etc., are made on steel sheet products. CONSTITUTION:With a purpose to improve mechanical and physical characteristics of products, such as disc plate of friction clutch for motorcars, manufactured by a work forming of cold rolled or hot rolled steel sheets, the steel sheet is heated in RX gas containing 0.5-3.0% NH3 gas and 0.1-0.5% CH gas, such as butane, etc., and the sheet is hardened after carburizing and nitriding are made on the surface with the gas. Temperature of gas carburizing and nitriding treatments is set to a level of 700-780 deg.C and that of hardening is set to 600-700 deg.C, both of which are lower than those of conventional methods. As the result of this arrangement, occurrences of hardening distortion are reduced and the following tempering time can be reduced considerably. Moreover, improvement in mechanical and physical characteristics of disc plate can be achieved without applying any film of phosphoric acid containing zinc.
