Abstract

PURPOSE: The titled rushlike structure that is composed of foamed strings of an acrylonitrile polymer containing a specified amount of phosphate salt, thus giving closely similar foamed appearance, touch, water and moisture absorption to natural rush (used for the surface web of "tatami" mat) and further showing high flame retardancy.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile only or a mixture thereof with at least one of ethylenically unsaturated compounds such as methyl acrylate is mixed with water containing a phosphate salt such as sodium polyphosphate and the polymerization is effected under heating in the presence of a polymerization initiator to prepare an acrylic polymer. The resultant polymer is fed to a melt-spinning device and melted with heat under autogeneous pressure, then extruded through a single nozzle into a normal pressure zone to effect foaming extrusion. Thus, the objective structure containing 0.5W8wt% of phosphorus is obtained.
