Abstract

PURPOSE:To maintain highly precise printing quality, by providing gutters for arresting and recovering ink droplets that have flown outside a prescribed deviation range, and a detecting electrode for detecting the ink droplets that have flown into said gutters. CONSTITUTION:The ink jet printer comprises an ink jet head 1, charge electrodes 2, deflection electrode 3, 3' and others. The ink jet printer is provided with the gutters 6, 7 adjacent to and outside the deflection range of ink flying loci to a minimum deflection stage 0 and maximum deflection stage n. The gutter 7 is provided with the detecting electrode part 7b that is insulated from the gutter body by an insulator 7a, so that when a flown ink droplet that has deflected outside the maximum deflection stage n has collided against the detecting electrode 7b to induce charge, the charge is amplified by an amplifier 8 to produce output voltage. Thus, printing outside a prescribed printing area can be prevented and high printing quality can be maintained.
