Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain activated bentonite of considerably improved bindability and heat deterioration resistance which is obtained by the chemical treatment of Ca. bentonite of poor bindability and heat deterioration resistance.
CONSTITUTION: Ca.bentonite raw soil contg. 20W40% moisture is rough-ground with a roll crusher to ≤10mm diameters and is fed to a continuous mixer, for example, a bag mill, by using a constant-volume feeder. Next, a predetermined amount of sodium carbonate is supplied from a separate constant-volume feeder to the bag mill and the rough mixing with the roughly ground raw soil, after which the mixture is powerfly incorporated and kneaded. This admixture having been kneaded to the extent of not feeling the remaining of the composition of the clay rock of the raw soil when pressed with the fingertips is dried to 5W10% moisture, after which it is pulverized. The resulted activated bentonite is 90W150 milli equiv. in total basicity, ≥60 millimole/100g in uncalcined methylene blue adsorption amount and ≥55% in the residual rate of 500°C and 1 hour-calcined methylene blue adsorption amount. It has superior bindability and thermal deterioration resistance as a binder for molding sand.
