Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain excellent treatment effect by a simplified process in which the surfaces of ferromagnetic powder for magnetic ink are treated with a treating agent of polyoxyethylene monoalkylamine in a treating medium containing a highly polar hydrophilic organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: In the manufacture of a magnetic ink by dispersing a ferromagnetic powder, e.g., gamma-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, etc. together with a binder, e.g., an epoxy resin, an urea resin, etc., abd a necessary additive, e.g., an antistatic agent, an aging inhibitor, a lubricant, a colorant, etc., into an organic solvent, the surfaces of the ferromagnetic powder are treated in a treating medium containg as a treating agent a polyoxyethylene monoalkylamine of the formula [wherein R is a CnH2n+1 (n is 8W30) and l and m are each 1W10] and 5wt% or more highly polar hydrophilic organic solvent of a dielectric constant of 4 or more (at 4°C) and a solubility of 50g or more in 100g of water, e.g., ethylene chlorohydrin, ethanol, etc. Thus, excellent surface treatment can be attained witout the needs for drying process.
