Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a ferromagnetic powder giving a magnetic ink, excellent in coat properties, magnetic characteristics and ink suitability, by dispersing a ferromagnetic powder, surface-treated with a polyoxyethylene alkyl (aryl) ether phosphate, in an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A ferromagnetic powder is surface-treated with a polyoxyethylene alkyl(aryl)ether phosphate of formula I or II (wherein R is 8W30C alkyl or alkylaryl; n and m are 2W15), in a treating medium containing 5wt% or more of a highly polar hydrophilic organic solvent of ≥4 dielectric constant at 20°C and ≥50g solubility in 100g water. Then the surface-treated ferromagnetic powder is dispersed in an organic solvent, together with a binder and a necessary additive, to prepare a magnetic ink. The highly polar hydrophilic organic solvent is ethylene chlorohydrin, methyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, etc.
