Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain scales having a large aspect ratio and suitable for use as an acoustic material by dissolving boron in a higher temp. part of molten Al provided with a temp. gradient, diffusing the dissolved boron in a lower temp. part, and depositing it as scaly aluminum boride.
CONSTITUTION: An Al mass is heated and kept at a molten state. The molten Al mass is provided with a temp. gradient, and a boron lump is brought into contact with the surface of a relatively high temp. part and held to dissolve boron in the Al melt. Boron halide or other gas as a boron atom supply source may be brought into contact with the part. The dissolved boron is diffused in a lower temp. part of the Al melt and deposited as scaly aluminum boride at the part. The residual Al is then removed by dissolution with hydrochloric acid to obtain aluminum boride scales. This reaction is preferably carried out in a reactor made of zirconia, magnesia or the like in a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
