Abstract

PURPOSE:To discriminate the type of the magnetic tape, by recording the signal having the fixed frequency, level and bias each on the tape the type of which is unknown and then reproducing the recorded signal for comparison of the reproduced output level. CONSTITUTION:The change-over switches SW3, SW4 and SW5 are switched to the TEST side. The piled signal of the test signal having the fixed frequency and level and given from the test signal generator 7 and the test-use bias signal given from the record bias osciillator 6 is recorded on the magnetic tape 3 via the record amplifier 4 and the record head 1. The recorded signal is picked up through the reproduction head 2 and the reproduction amplifier 5, and the reproduced output level signal is obtained through the rectifying/smoothing circuit 8. This level signal is applied to the comparators 9A-9D of the level detecting circuit 9 to be compared with the reference level signal proper to the tape. Thus the type of the tape can be discriminated.
