Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain methanol advantageously, by bringing H2, CO, and CO2 into contact with a catalyst, separating crude methanol from the formed gas through condensation, washing the separated gas with water under specific conditions, recycling the gas through the catalyst layer again, and recovering methanol form the washed water.
CONSTITUTION: A mixed gas consisting essentially of H2, CO, and CO2 is brought into contact with a catalyst under pressure to give a gaseous methanol-containing gas. The gas is then cooled and crude methanol is separated by condensation. The separated gas is washed at a pressure substantially equal to that of the catalyst layer with water which is fed at a ratio of not less than 210l per hour based on 10,000Nm3 gas per hour so that the remaining methanol in the gas is contained in the washed water and separated from the gas, the gas containing a small amount of methanol is recycled through the catalyst layer to increase a synthetic amount of methanol. The washed water is fed to a rectifying column to remove low-boiling fractions from crude condensed methanol and almost all the amount of synthesized methanol is recovered without requiring excess amount of heat.
