Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a high-quality optical fiber matrix with a good reproducibility by a method wherein a concentrical multiple pipe is installed around a burner tube for generating glass fine particles, gas is flowed through these pipes to cause a laminar flow in the reaction container in which an optical fiber matrix grows. CONSTITUTION:Porous glass matrix 2, a heating furnace 3, optical fiber matrix 4, and a reaction container 6 are shown. Around the fine-glass-particle-generating burner pipe 1, concentric multiple pipes such as quadrupipe 15-1, 15-2, 15-3, 15-4 are installed. In each pipe, gas is flowed along the flow of flame 5. To increase the stability of the burner flame 5 against external disturbance, the quadrupipe is made higher by l than the burner tube. The stability is increased by a larger value ofl2 and by controlling the gas flow in each of the quadrupipe so that the gas flow amounts gets smaller in the vicinity of the burner tube and gats as it goes further therefrom.
