Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide the titled perform having small optical transmission loss, small optical signal distortion, and large strength by a method wherein gas contg. a gaseous silicone cpd., NH3 and oxygen is reacted in a flame and the produced glass fine powder is stacked on the starting material and then is sintered. CONSTITUTION:A thin silica tube 11 as a starting material is rotated and moved reciprocatingly. To it, a high-temperature inert gas plasma flame 12' formed by a high-temperature plasma torch 12 is injected. During this process, a gaseous silicone cpd. such as SiH4, SiHCl3 and SiCl4 and an oxygen-containing gas such as NH3 plus O2, CO2, and NO2 are sent into the flame 12' to cause a reaction. Fine glass powder 13' of SiOxNy as a result of this reaction is stacked on the silica tube 11 so that a glass fine powder body 14 is formed. The glass fine powder body 14 is sintered in vacuum or an inert gas atmosphere contg. no oxygen to provide a nitrogen-doped silica glass.
