Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a wide range of diphenols useful as a raw material for heat- resistant resins or polyesters, readily, by the dehalogenation and dimerization of a halogenated phenol, in the presence of a base and a Pd catalyst, in methanol solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A halogenated phenol expressed by formula I (n is an integer 0W2; X is Cl, Br or I; R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, alkoxyl or hydroxyl), e.g. p- chlorophenol, is dehalogenated and dimerized in methanol solvent in an amount of 2W40 times that of the raw material by weight, in the presence of a base [a hydroxide, oxide, carbonate, bicarbonate or alkoxide of an alkali (earth) metal, e.g. NaOH or KOH] in a molar amount of 0.8W8 times that of the raw material, and a Pd catalyst, e.g. Pd/CaCO3, preferably at 70W200°C, to give diphenol expressed by formula II.
USE: A stabilizer, an intermediate for dyestuffs, or a raw material for polycarbonates.
