PURPOSE:To prevent the separation of the active materials of a lead storage battery from its plates without causing any deterioration to the efficiency of inserting an assembled element, by compressing a porous elastic sheet across the thickness of that before the compressed sheet is fixed by means of a water-soluble binder to prepare a separator, and by pouring an electrolyte after the battery is assembled. CONSTITUTION:The separator of a solidified body 3 made of a porous elastic sheet is interposed between a negative plate 1 and a positive plate 2 to form an assembled element. Next, the assembled element is placed in a container cell 6, before an electrolyte is poured into the cell 6.
