Abstract

PURPOSE: To ensure an easy measurement of the distance for a travelling object, by dividing the light sent from the spot light source into two beams, detecting these beams by the image pickup element and thus measuring the distance between the two spots to measure the distance up to the light source.
CONSTITUTION: The light from the light emitting diode 7 is divided through two slits S1 and S2 to be caught by the solid state pickup element 9 as the two spots for output. Thus the distance l from the point P to the surface C of the pickup element is shown as l=a.l0/(a-a0), where P is the position of the light emitting diode, a0 is the distance between S1 and S2, l0 is the distance between the slit and the pickup element and (a) is the distance between the intersections of the two pieces of the divided beams and the surface C of the pickup element respectively. The light hits the element 9 at two areas, and thus two units of pulses V1 having the prescribed interval T are delivered from the output of the element 9.
