Abstract

PURPOSE: To avoid to misjudge an irregular page as a reqular page because of a partial dirt or a detected position shear by a method wherein plural detection points are taken on a sheet surface, and are compared with one another.
CONSTITUTION: A sensor 1 is fitted at a frame part of a gathering machine and light is projected to the lowermost part of folding sheets placed on the frame part. The reflection light is received in a light receiving element which is converted into an analog electronic quantity. Making use of the movement of folding sheets, many points are taken as measurement point and an analog electronic quantity from each measurement point is converted into a digital signal through an AD converter 13 to be stored in one of storages 15 and 16. In a level defect detector 31, signals corresponding to the same places of other publications to be monitored are compared with the signals stored in the storeges 15, 16 which are made a reference signal, and if a signal has a difference more than a certain level is decided as a defective signal, and then, the number of defective signals is compared with the specified number of a defect ratio detector 51 to discriminate whether the type is the same or different.
