Abstract

PURPOSE: To convert nitrogen trichloride to ammonium chloride and improve the treating efficiency of exhaust gas by contacting an aqueous sulfite soln. having been controlled to the specific pH range with the exhaust gas.
CONSTITUTION: In treating an exhaust gas contg. nitrogen trichloride having been diluted with a large amount of air, alkali metal hydroxides such as sodium hydroxide or carbonate of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals and ammonia or the like are added to an aqueous sulfite soln. of sodium sulfite, ammonium sulfite, etc. dissolved with a small amount of lower alcohol to control its pH to a 5W10 range. When the exhaust gas is washed by spraying this soln., nitrogen trichloride is quickly converted to ammonium chloride. The reason for limiting the pH is: Above 10 pH, the exhaust gas becomes white fume and below 5 pH, sulfur dioxide is produced.
