Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover the effective components other than methanol and methanol and improve exhaust gas treatment efficiency by washing the exhaust gas of the production process for methylphenols with an aqueous methanol soln. then washing the same with water.
CONSTITUTION: The exhaust gas produced at the time of producing methylphenols by causing vapor-phase reaction of phenol and methanol is admitted through a conduit 2 into a washing tower 1 after it has been heat-recovered or cooled down to≤ 90°C in temperature. At this time, an aqueous methanol soln. of ≥10mol in concn. which has b.p. higher than the exhaust gas temp. is supplied through a conduit 8 to the tower top to wash the exhaust gas. Then, the effective components other than the methanol are recovered and are taken out through a conduit 3. On the other hand, the exhaust gas having been washed flows through a conduit 4 into a scrubber 5, where it is washed by the water flowing down from a conduit 10 and the methanol is recovered and is taken out into a tank 13. The treated exhaust gas becomes only the inert gas component and is exhausted through a conduit 9. The aqueous methanol soln. recovered into the tank 13 is controlled to predetermined concn. and is supplied via a heat exchanger 11 into the washing tower 1.
