The gas discharge lamp 1 is for high voltage discharge, and the gas discharge lamp 2 is connected to the discharge lamp 1 electrically in parallel. An impedance element 7 is connected to the gas discharge lamp 2 electrically in series, and the relation between the terminal voltage V0 of a circuit including the gas discharge lamp 2 and impedance element 7 and the light starting voltage Vs is so established that it satisfys Vo>=Vs. The gas discharge lamp 1 is lighted by connecting the gas discharge lamp 25 to a source 24 through a stabilizer 23. When the discharge lamp 1 fails to light due to a depression of the source voltage, the gas discharge lamp 2 starts to light.
