Abstract

PURPOSE:To effect an efficient and uniform heating process by a method wherein a heated gas is blown into the inside of a horizontally moving steel pipe from its both ends alternately. CONSTITUTION:A steel pipe is efficiently preheated by a waste gas from a quenching furnace. After the steel pipe 6 is heated to about 1,000 deg.C in the quenching furnace 1, it is subject to a rapid-cool quenching treatment in water, and guided into a preheating device 5. Combustion waste gas from the furnace 1 is sent via an air preheater 3, a close/open valve 8, a suction blower 9, into the preheating device. There, the waste gas passes through piping 16 and drawn into the steel pipe 6 from jet nozzles 17. The drawing operation is conducted alternately by switching dampers 18, 19. In this manner, the inner surface is heated by heated gas that is drawn, and the external surface is heated by the atmosphere of combustion waste gas having a specific temperature in the device 5. The steel pipe 6 is given uniform heating and efficiently preheated to a specified temperature before entering into a tempering furnace 2.
