Abstract

PURPOSE: To make machining easy and obtain the metal mold of superior endurance by applying ferritization annealing to the original metal mold which is molded by casting and subjecting the same to machining such as surface polishing then nitriding the same to the specific surface hardness.
CONSTITUTION: First, the wooden pattern of the same shape as a metal mold 1 for shell molding is manufactured and the original metal mold made of copper-chromium cast iron through casting by using this. After this original metal mold having high hardness is subjected to ferritization annealing, it is subjected to machining such as surface polishing. Since this annealing lets the original metal mold have Vickers hardness of about 150Hv, it becomes possible to be polished by an ordinary file. Particularly, the working of the places such as fins 5 whih are difficult to machine with conventional ones becomes easy. This machining lets the respective part sizes of the original metal mold coincide with design sizes. Following to this, this original metal mold is subjected to ion nitriding, whereby the metal mold for shell molding having surface hardness of Vickers hardness 900Hv or more is obtained.
