Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a blowing agent which can easily be blended with building compositional materials and whose central part is hollow, by a method wherein borax is mixed with an aq. soln. of sodium silicate, the mixt. is gently heated to attain a specified water content where the mixt. is apparently in a dried state the mixt. is quenched to solidify it, the resulting solid is ground, and the resulting particulate matter is heated at a high temperature for a short time.
CONSTITUTION: Borax is mixed with an aq. soln. of sodium silicate. The mixt. is gently heated until a material having a water content of about 30% is obtd. where the mixt. is apparently in a dried state. The heated material is quenched to solidify all of the material. The resulting solid is ground to a particulate matter having a particle diameter of 1W3mmϕ. The particulate matter is heated at a high temperature for a short time to produce the desired blowing agent which is hollow only in the central part of the particulate part and is in a semi-expanded state.
