PURPOSE:To enhance the electron-emitting ability of an electrode for a discharge lamp by employing lanthanum oxide and an oxide of rare-earth-metal of lanthanide series other than lanthanum to prepare an electron-emitting substance which is added to the electrode. CONSTITUTION:Either an electrode 2a or 2b of a luminous tube 1 which is installed in a metal-vapor discharge-lamp consists of a core 15 made of tungsten or the like, an inside coil 16 and an outside coil 17 which are coiled round the core 15, and an electron-emitting substance 18 which is stuck over the surfaces of the coils. Here, the electron-emitting substance 18 is prepared from lanthanum oxide which is added with 0.5-95mol% of an oxide of rare-earth-metal of lanthanide series other than lanthanum. As a result, the fusing point of the electron-emitting substance 18 is reduced, and the adhesiveness of the substance 18 to the electrodes is enhanced. Consequently, the separation of the substance 18 from the electrodes can be obviated, and the electron-emitting ability of the electrodes can be maintained for a long time.
