Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve the reduction in connection losses by sending the signal of constant intensity continuously from one end of the optical fibers to be connected, detecting the output thereof at the other end of the optical fibers and suspending electric discharge when the detected output becomes maximum. CONSTITUTION:Light or the like of constant intensity is sent continuously from a transmitter 18 and while this is being received in a detector 20, fusion-bonding and connecting by arc 16 are accomplished. If it is assumed that fibers 10, 12 are butted at T0, the output P0 of that time is determined by axial deviation and the accuracy of end faces. Electric discharge is started at T1 and pushing is done until T2. The output increases gradually while fluctuating intricately. At T2, the pushing is stopped and the electric discharge is continued to perform molding and heating. During this time, the output increases gradually and becomes Pmax at T3, after which it again decreases. Thereupon, if the electric discharge is suspended at the time when Pmax is detected, the fibers may be connected in an optimum time, that is, at a minimum loss.
