Abstract
PURPOSE:To protect the connecting portion and to prevent the transmission loss from being increased by abutting metal coated optical fibers having smoothed ends against each other at their ends and then fitting them in a tube made of a similar material of the metal so that the both ends of the pipe and the coating material may be connected. CONSTITUTION:The end faces 10A and 10B of optical fibers A and Bm which are prepared by coating the glasses 11A and 11B with metal coatings 12A and 12B, are smoothed and abutted against each other while being fitted in a metal tube of similar material to the coating such that the both end portions of the tube 13 and the coatings 12A and 12B are jointed and sealed with the similar metal 14 to them. It is preferred that the jointing operatin be accomplished in the vacuum or inert gas atmosphere. In order to increase the coupling efficiency between the optical fibers connected, the jointing operation may preferably be accomplished while measuring the loss by passing the light through the fibers and while measuring the electric resistance by supplying an electric power through the coatings.
