PURPOSE:To automatically control the outer diameter of the finished pipe to the normal value, by feedforward setting the roll gap of the respective stands of the sizing mill depending on the outer diameter and temperature of the pipe blank, and by feeding back the outer diameter and temperature on the run-out side of the mill and the outer diameter after cooling, in manufacturing the seamless steel pipe. CONSTITUTION:The temperature of the pipe blank 17 is measured by the thermometers 2, 5, at the exit of the reeler 1 or at the exit of the next reheating furnace 4. From the time required in carrying the pipe blank 17 to the entrance of the sizing mill 7, the temperature and outer diameter at the entrance of the mill 7 are presumed, and the roll gap is set so as to make the outer diameter to be obtained by the final stand to be equal to the aim outer diameter under the hot condition. Hereupon, the roll gap is decided so as to make the outer diameter at the exit of the stand M to be proportional to the designed reference cumulative drawing rate. This correction value for the roll gap is multiplied by the feedback factor proportional to the cumulative outer diameter drawing rate of the n-th stand, in consideration of the mutual influence of the drafts by the stands of odd numbers and of even numbers; hereby, the reference roll gap is corrected and the outer diameter and the roundness of the finished pipe are corrected.
