PURPOSE:To cool the hot rolled rod material exactly to the aim coiling temperature without time- lag, by forecasting the mill's run-out side temperature from the actually measured rod material's temperature at the feed-in side of the finishing mill, and by controlling the amount of the cooling water according to the forecasted run-out side temperature, in case of cooling the hot rolled rod material. CONSTITUTION:In case of finish rolling the rod material by the hot finishing mill 5, the rod temperature T1(t) at the feed-in side of the finishing mill 5 at the time (t) is measured by the thermometer 10. From the correlation between the inlet and outlet temperatures of the finishing mill 5, the forecasted temperature T2'(t+DELTAt12) of the rod material on the run-out side of the finishing mill 5 after passing the time DELTAt12 required by the rod material in passing through the finishing mill 5, that is the time (t+DELTAt12), is obtained. Next, from the correlatin model for the mill's run-out side temperature, the amount of the cooling water, and the coiling temperature, the temperature T3'(t+DELTAt13) after the time DELTAt13 required by the rod material from running out of the mill till arriving at the coiler 7 is forecasted. The amount of the cooling water Q(t+DELTAt13) required in making above forecasted temperature to be equal to the aim coiling temperature T3 is calculated, and this amount of cooling water is supplied from the water cooling device 6 for cooling the rod material.
