Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the suctions and exhaust efficiencies of an internal combustion engine whose cylinder bores and pistons have elliptical cross sections by permitting a plurality of suction ports and exhaust ports provided for each of the combustion chambers to gather and be communicated with one main port respectively.
CONSTITUTION: A four-cycle internal combustion engine has a cylinder block 1 provided with four cylinder bores 4... having elliptical cross sections and a cylinder head 2 provided with four combustion chambers 12... of the same shape corresponding to the cylinder bores 4.... Four suction valve openings 13... and four exhaust valve openings 14... are made in the walls of each combustion chamber 12 divided by the short axis s-s of the cross sections. These valve openings 13... and 14... are communicated with suction ports 151W154 and exhaust ports 171W174 respectively, and these porst 151W154 and 171W174 gather and are communicated with one main suction port 16 and one main exhaust port 18 respectively. These ports 16 and 18 are arranged inclining with respect to the longitudinal central line L of the cylinder bore 4 so as to form a V shape.
