Abstract
PURPOSE: To make possible the diversification of display contents by obtaining a polarizing element which consists in arraying micro-polarizing regions of different rates of polarization and polarization directions in a mosaic shape on one sheet of substrate.
CONSTITUTION: Polarized light is irradiated to a thin film comprising a material having light absorption anisotropy so that polarization power is produced by the selective decoloring reaction with selective light absorption. For example, when Argon laser polarized light of 514nm wavelength is condensed to about 10KW/cm2 and irradiated to a thin film of, for example, dichromatic dye Congo Red (maximum absorption wavelength 520nm and light absorption is anisotropic), the irradiated parts are decolorized instantaneously and a polarizing element of 70% rate of polarization could be obtained as an example. If the laser is scanned in a pattern shape while its polarization direction is changed, a mosaic-shaped polarizing element of locally differing polarization directions could be obtained. In addition, if the laser is scanned while its output is changed, a polarizing element of locally differing rates of polarization could be obtained.
