Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled aqueous solution useful as an improver for wet strength of paper, having high concentration and stability, by reacting an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with a polyalkylene polyamine and epichlorohydrin successively, followed by adjusting pH.
CONSTITUTION: (A) An aliphatic dicarboxylic acid is reacted with (B) a polyalkylene polyamine in the presence of (C) a sulfonic acid, in molar ratios of A/B of 1/1W 1.2 and C/B of 0.005W0.1 until the viscosity at 25°C of 50wt% aqueous solution of prepared polyamide polyamine reaches 400W1,000cps. (D) Epichlorohydrin in 1.6W 1.7 times amount based on that of the secondary amino group of the component B in 15W50wt% aqueous solution is reacted with the aqueous solution of the polyamide polyamine until the viscosity at 25°C of 15wt% aqueous solution of reaction product reaches 30W150cps. The prepared solution is optionally diluted with water until solid content reaches 150W30wt%, and an acid, etc. is added to adjust 3W5pH at 25°C.
