Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a shaft seal apparatus excellent in durability and sealing function, and easy to handle at low cost by introducing a buffer solution into a sealed space formed by oil seals, and sealing the space.
CONSTITUTION: A housing 3 is devided into 3a and 3b to correspond to seal portions 1a and 1b, respectively, of a shaft 1 supported by an apparatus body 2, a process fluid La is sealed by a first oil seal 5, and a buffer liquid Lb is sealed by a second oil seal 6 and a third oil seal 7. The buffer liquid Lb is supplied to circulate into the sealed space 8 surrounded by the second and third oil seals 6, 7, the housing 3b and the shaft 3b. The buffer liquid is retained at a pressure higher than that of the process liquid Lb, and therefore together with the first oil seal 5 prevents completely the leakage of the process liquid La to the outside, and further is useful to cool sealed portions. Said constitution provides a shaft seal apparatus excellent in durability and sealing function, and easy to handle at low cost.
