Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a positive sensing of a damaged condition of the tool and a normal condition of the tool by a method wherein a relation between a width of wariation of a major axis current value and a mean value during a cutting operation which is accompanied by an intermittent cutting operation specified in a milling operation is utilized. CONSTITUTION:Electric current of the armature in DC motor 61 is sensed by a shunt circuit 62 and the output is fed to a calculation unit 65 for the width W of variation found in a cutting current of the motor 61 and a calculation unit 66 for a mean value R of an electric current of the motor through a low pass filter 63, A/D converter 64. The outputs from the calculation units 65, 66 are fed to the calculation unit 67 and one dimensionless value (R/W) or (W/R) is calculated in reference to two values of R and W. The calculated value is fed to the discrimination unit 71 and it is judged wheater the cutting tool is in an abnormal or normal condition.
