Abstract

PURPOSE: To estimate life of a tool, by measuring a transition of the cutting temperature of a cutting tool during machining and to avoid giving damage to a work which is being machined by stopping a machine tool before the cutting tool reaches its life.
CONSTITUTION: This is to stop a machine tool right before the tool on it reaches its life by utilizing a phenomenon that the cutting temperature of a tool during cutting does not practically change but the temperature rises sharply right before the tool fails. In order to take out thermoelectromotive force developing between a tool 1 and a work 4 to be machined a lead wire 6 is silver-soldered to the rear end of a tool holder 2 and an electrode brush 7 is pressed on a work 4 in order to take out thermoelectromotive force developing between a tool 1 and a work 4 to be machined. Electromotive force takenout from the rear end of the tool and the electrode brush 7 is supplied to an AWD convertor B through an amplifier A, and it is changed into a digital signal to be input in an arithmetic unit C. The arithmetic unit C issues a control signal to a controller D of the machine tool F and controls its tool feeding mechanism.
