Abstract

PURPOSE: Cellulose acetate and a specific modacrylic copolymer are dissolved in a solvent, extruded into a coagulation bath, drawn under specific conditions and dried to product titled fiber having specified surface area, void volume, high water-absorption and good quality.
CONSTITUTION: (A) 2W50wt% of cellulose acetate and (B) 50W98wt% of modacrylic polymer containing 20W60wt% of vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride are dissolved in a solvent such as dimethyl-formamide to form a solution of 15W35wt% concentration. The solution is extruded into a coagulation bath, primarily drawn at a draw ratio of 2.5W8, then the resultant fiber swollen with water is dried at 100W 180°C until the water content comes down to less than 1.0wt%. Further, the fiber is secondarily drawn with wet heat at a draw ratio of less than 3 to provide the objected porous synthetic fiber with a surface area A of void of less than 15m2/g, void volume V of 0.05W0.75cm2/g where V/A is more than 1/50.
