Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to dispose of remaining molten metal without inclining a tundish and a mold as a whole, by equipping the tundish described in the title with a nozzle extending vertically at the bottom so as to connect the inside to the outside, and by opening or closing the nozzle with refractory material.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal is poured through a nozzle 2 made in the side wall of a tundish 1 into a mold 3 connected to the outside of the nozzle 2 nearly horizontally, and the solidified cast billet is drawn off horizontally. A nozzle 5 is made at the bottom of the tundish 1 which opens nearly vertically through the bottom wall, and a refractory material 7 is placed on the upper surface of a supporting stand 6 for the tundish 1. The refractory material 7 is connected to the top end of a lever 9 which is freely rotatable horizontally around a fulcrum 8, hereby the nozzle 5 is opened or closed by sliding the refractory material 7 along the surface of the stand 6 by the rotation of the lever 9. Consequently, the remaining molten metal is discharged simply and easily by rotating the lever 9 so as to open the nozzle 5 after completion of casting.
