Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the abrasion resistance of the high speed steel by a method wherein the high speed steel is preliminarily coated by a titanium nitride layer with predetermined thickness in a PVD method and, thereafter, coated by a titanium carbide or titanium carbonitride layer. CONSTITUTION:An extremely thin titanium nitride film with thickness of 0.1-2mu, pref., 0.5-1mu is formed on the high speed steel and, succeedingly, the coating film of titanium carbide or titanium nitride with thickness of for example, 1-10mu, pref., 2-4mu is coated thereon. For example, the high speed steel is processed into SNP 432 and, by using an ion plating reaction apparatus, the titanium heated and evaporated by electron beam is ionized at ion voltage of +60V and base voltage of -0.5KV is applied. Herein, said steel is maintained for 10min. at 3 10<-4> Torr in a nitrogen atmosphere. Subsequently, said steel is maintained for 90min. at 4 10<-4> Torr in an acetylene atmosphere to obtain a coated film comprising the TiN layer with 0.5mu and the TiC layer with 4.5mu.
