CONSTITUTION: Resorcinol is reacted with methanol at 200W400°C in the presence of ammonium halide (e.g. ammonium chloride), to obtain 2,6-dihydroxytoluene, which is reacted with ammonia at 250W350°C in the presence of ammonium halide and cobalt balide [e.g. cobalt chloride (II)], to obtain the titled substance. The amounts of ammonium halide and cobalt halide are 0.01W100pts.wt. to 100pts.wt. of the raw material of each process.
EFFECT: The desired substance can be produced selectively at low cost.
USE: Raw material for the syntheses of pigments, etc.
