Abstract

PURPOSE: To accomplish the precise measurement of fine displacement by detecting the displacement with respect to the interface of the magnetic field of a magnetic resistance element from changes in the resistance of the element provided on the interface of two magnetic fields intersected to each other in such a manner that the main current passage is parallel to one magnetic field thereof.
CONSTITUTION: The magnetic resistance element 1 has a ferromagnetic thin metal film 1b and electrodes 1c and 1d on the substrate 1a. The first magnetic field 2 and the second magnetic field 3 are provided, one parallel to and the other perpendicular to the length of the magnetic resistance element in such a manner that the magnetic field intensity is high enough to magnetize the magnetic resistance element 1 saturatedly. A constant voltage power source 5 is connected to the element 1 to check voltage changes of a series resistance 4 whereby detection is made on how the magnetic resistance element displaces from the interface between the first and second magnetic fields. This is accomplished because the resistance of the magnetic resistance element 1 reaches its maximum in the magnetic field parallel to the main current while its minimum in the magnetic field perpendicular thereto. This enables precise measurement of the fine displacement contactless.
