Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain ethanol in high selectivity, by the reaction of methanol and synthesis gas in the presence of water in an inert solvent at a specific temperature range, using a halogen-containing cobalt catalyst containing a chelating phosphine of a specific structure as a ligand.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of ethanol by the reaction of synthesis gas (mixture of CO and H2) which is easily prepared from natural gas, coal, etc., with methanol, the reaction is carried out at 170W250°C, especially 180W250°C, in an inert solvent in the presence of water and a catalyst comprising Co or a Co compound (e.g. cobalt bromide, etc.), a chelating phosphine [e.g. 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, etc.] of formula (R1WR4 are aliphatic, alicyclic, or aromatic group; X is 2C hydrocarbon residue) and at least one halogen-containing substance selected from Br, I or compounds thereof.
EFFECT: This catalyst exhibits activity under mild conditions, and the chelating phosphines have high oxidation resistance, low volatility and toxicity and are easily available.
